Iwo Jima
Iwo Jima (en japonés 硫黄島 Iōjima, «isla de azufre») es una isla japonesa de origen volcánico ubicada a aproximadamente 1.000 km al sur de Tokio, con una superficie de 20 km². La isla fue el teatro de la batalla de Iwo-Jima en el marco de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, a consecuencia de la cual la isla fue ocupada por Estados Unidos hasta 1968.

Está situada en el océano Pacífico occidental; tiene unos 8 km (5 mi) de largo por 730 m–4 km (800 yardas–2.5 mi) de ancho y una superficie de 20 km2 (8 mi2). Permaneció bajo control japonés hasta 1945, año en que fue escenario de una de las campañas más duras de la segunda guerra mundial. Después de un intenso bombardeo aéreo por aviones estadounidenses (dic. 1944–feb. 1945) fue invadida por infantes de marina hasta su total conquista a mediados de marzo; se transformó en una base estratégica para aviones estadounidenses en ruta a Japón. Fue devuelta a Japón en 1968.
